A person can have a concussion and not even be aware of it. Experiencing a concussion does not require that a person passes out. Therefore, if one has recently been in a car accident, suffered a sports injury, or even had a trip and fall, he may have suffered whiplash or a concussion. If this type of injury is left uncared for, it can lead to major health problems later in life.
A concussion changes the way that the brain works. It is a kind of MTBI (mild traumatic brain injury) that is usually the result of a blow to the head. However, it can also occur if one is shaken violently causing the brain the rock back and forth within the skull. If one has suffered any head trauma, here are some symptoms to be aware of that may indicate a concussion.
- Ringing in the ears – called tinnitus
- Damaged blood vessels
- Nausea and vomiting
- Injury to the nerves
- Feeling sluggish
- Visible bruising
- Abnormal headaches
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Personality or behavioral changes
- Loss of consciousness
- Visual disturbances
- Trouble concentrating
- Memory loss
- Loss of balance
One way to tell whether or not a person has suffered a concussion is by observing if he can resume normal activities within 15 minutes of enduring the accident. Another good idea following any head injury is to make an appointment to see an upper cervical chiropractor.
Concussions and Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care
A misalignment to either the C1 or C2 vertebra can lead to the above list of symptoms. An upper cervical chiropractor will examine a person to identify such a misalignment of the C1 or C2 vertebra. If a misalignment is found, a gentle, precise method is used to encourage the bones of the neck to move back into their original position. Communication between the brain and body can thus be restored, and a person can get back to a normal daily routine without the symptoms associated with a concussion to deal with.
