Many people feel the effects of a concussion long after it happens. This is called post-concussion syndrome (PCS). When trauma to the head or neck occurs, it can affect the way the rest of the body functions. This is due to the fact that the brain communicates with the body through the brainstem. The pathway it follows is very small. The two bones of the upper neck, called the atlas and axis, located at the top of the spine keep the head in proper position. If either the atlas or the axis is misaligned, even by a mere ¼ of a millimeter, this pathway can become obstructed. This hinders the body’s communication system, resulting in post-concussion syndrome.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care and Post Concussion Syndrome
At Living Well Chiropractic, we specialize in making sure the atlas and axis are in the proper position, thus ensuring the best health possible for our patients. We use gentle techniques to realign these top two vertebrae without popping or twisting the spine. Once the misalignment is corrected, our patients report feeling much better. In most cases, PCS symptoms go away. This all sounds good in theory, but is there any proof that it really works?
How Upper Cervical Helped Her
A 23-year-old woman slipped and fell resulting in a concussion. She sought the care of an upper cervical chiropractor after 5 months because she was still suffering from positional vertigo and headaches. This is typical of post-concussion syndrome. Her headaches had gotten much worse after her fall; vertigo was a new symptom.
It was determined that her body was off balance, and she was having muscles spasms in her neck. Her legs were of differing lengths. All of this happened because her fall caused her top vertebrae to misalign.
After her first adjustment, her vertigo and headaches went away. Her next day follow-up appointment showed that her legs were becoming balanced, and her muscle spasms had decreased. After receiving care twice a month, she was reported to have recovered completely. Her headaches and vertigo were gone, and she was able to get her life back. There are many other cases that support this one and prove that upper cervical chiropractic really does work!
