Torticollis is a condition that develops due to damage of the nervous system, spine, and muscles. It causes the head to tilt to one side and twists the neck and chin to the other side. It may be a genetic condition, or it may have happened at birth. If it is present at birth, it is referred to as congenital torticollis and may have been caused if the blood supply to the neck was hindered or the muscles were injured. It may also be due to the infant’s head being at the wrong angle while it was developing within the womb. Torticollis can also come about in adulthood.
If the head voluntarily moves forward or backward, it is called spasmodic torticollis. This is an extremely painful condition. Basically, the head is twisting to one side because of the involuntary contraction of the muscles in the neck. The reason this occurs may be an injury to the upper neck or back (for example – forceps or suction being used at birth or the umbilical cord being wrapped around the baby’s neck). In some cases, cervical dystonia develops immediately, or it may take longer, even years, to show up.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic and Torticollis
It has been noted that upper cervical chiropractic care may help improve torticollis naturally. It is different than general chiropractic care as it does not require popping or cracking of the spine or neck. It is a gentle, precise method that helps the bones of the neck to realign naturally with very little force. This reduces irritation to the central nervous system, often allowing the body to begin functioning at its peak once again.
Here at our Plymouth, Minnesota office, we use specialized diagnostic techniques to help determine where the problem lies before we begin working with a patient. We only give adjustments when needed. Many have reported improvement in torticollis symptoms after entrusting us with their care. To schedule your NUCCA evaluation, click the button below:
