Loosen Muscle Knots

Muscle AcheIf you have ever experienced a muscle knot, no doubt you would agree that it can hurt. The pain can extend from tolerable all the way to sharp and stabbing, depending on how you move.

What Are Muscle Knots?

Muscle knots are not really knots in our muscles. It feels like it, but in reality, these “knots” are muscle fibers that get stuck to each other from lack of use or overuse. Our muscles are meant to be flexible and challenged. However, when we sit at a desk all day and move very little, or when we overuse certain muscles, knots can be the result.

Sometimes, though, these ‘knots’ also occur as a result of activities that strain the muscles, such as whiplash or a workout. Sitting or lying in the wrong position for too long can also cause these knots. Misusing or straining the muscle can cause our muscle fibers not to release properly.

What Can You Do?

Although we cannot avoid some accidents or injuries, we can take precautions to avoid muscle pain. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Maintain good posture
  • Lift properly – using your legs
  • Exercise often

Another thing you can do to relieve your muscle pain is to have a good massage therapist. It is critical that you speak to a professional as they have specialized training that can help them to determine exactly how much pressure to apply so as not to damage the muscle any further.

In your own home, you can use a foam roller in order to ease muscle tension. Roll over the muscle about 12 times, doing so 3 times a day until the knot feels better.
