Migraines are neurological in nature, meaning that they are more than just headaches. They come along with a variety of other symptoms such as sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and dizziness. It is important for those suffering from migraines to be aware of what may be triggering them. By avoiding these triggers, a person will have fewer migraine episodes.
Although the reason for migraines remains a mystery in the medical community, there are known migraine triggers a person can watch for. A good way to keep track of this is by keeping a migraine journal. Here is list of triggers that can affect a migraine sufferer:
- Loud noises
- Diet – certain drinks or foods, additives, preservatives, and allergens
- Flashing and/or bright lights
- Changes in hormone levels
- Being tired
- Too much stress
A Possible Root Cause for Migraines
While the above-mentioned triggers can bring on migraines, there may be an underlying cause that is making them happen in the first place. This means that while the medical community continues to try new and different medications, hoping that each one is the answer for the pain that their patients are experiencing, nothing will work long-term unless this underlying problem is addressed. What is a possible root cause?
Often migraines are linked to a misalignment in the upper neck vertebrae that may be placing undue pressure on the brainstem. This area of the neck is the communication superhighway of the body. The C1 and C2 bones are supposed to protect the brainstem, but if they have become misaligned, they can actually keep the brainstem from sending proper signals. This can lead to a number of health conditions, including migraine headaches.
At Living Well Chiropractic, we help our migraine patients by using a gentle method that encourages the bones of the neck to realign naturally. Once this is done, the body begins to repair the damage done, and proper communication is restored. The end result may be fewer migraines. Some see them go away entirely.
