Stress. Everyone has it. Whether it is due to the work environment, family issues, financial problems, or just life in general, no one needs to deal with pain on top of it all. A person may not realize just where his pain is coming from. Oddly enough, it can be from that accident that occurred weeks, months, or even decades ago. If whiplash, which is over extending the neck muscles, happened, it may just be affecting the person now. It can be the reason for the pain felt.
Some who endure whiplash feel that icing it is enough. And, there is no doubt, ice can help. It can reduce the inflammation created by whiplash. Usually, it is not enough to restore the body back to its natural state of function. That is because whiplash could have done internal damage that is still lingering. What is this damage?
Misalignments Caused by Whiplash
Whiplash could have caused the upper cervical spine to form an “S” shape momentarily. This involves the top two vertebrae of the upper neck that are very susceptible to misalignments. Even though this only happened for a second or two, a misalignment could have occurred. This will need professional attention to be corrected.
A misalignment here can wreak havoc on many systems of the body. It causes undue pressure to be exerted on the brainstem. Therefore, communication, blood flow, and cerebral spinal fluid flow can all be hindered in their performance. What kind of issues can this cause in the body?
- Fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue
- Irregular sleep patterns
- Irritability and moodiness
- Depression and anxiety
- Pain or burning in the shoulder, neck, hips, or lower back
- Stiffness in the muscles
If a person feels like they can relate to some of these issues, it is a vital first step in his healing process to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. We are trained to detect the smallest of misalignments (1/4 of a millimeter) and then work with our patients to create an individualized treatment plan. Once the misalignment is corrected, our patients report feeling much better and have one less thing that is adding to the stress of life.
