Text Neck and Mobile Devices

Text Neck, Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Smartphone, Neck StrainIt is all too common to see people with their smartphones out with head and eyes tilted down, ever focused on the bright screen. Advancements in technology keep the world at our fingertips. While it may be convenient, there are some concerns that arise when it comes to health, especially neck health. Recently coined as ‘text neck,’ this term is used to describe the change in normal upper neck curvature. As mobile devices hold our attention for longer periods of time, head and neck structures are strained. Of particular concern is that young ones are developing this condition.

What Is Text Neck?

Text neck is not completely understood so addressing the cause can be a challenge. What healthcare professionals do know is that the head is heavy and depends on the neck, nerves, and muscles for support. This requires balance and strength.

The average head weighs 10 to 12 pounds. Staring at a screen with the head leaning down adds pressure to these supporting structures. The results can include neck pain and lead to misalignment. Other complications can follow as nerves and blood vessels can also be affected.

The Upper Cervical Solution

What can be done if you have text neck or are experiencing neck pain? Upper cervical chiropractors can help! We have years of experience evaluating the upper cervical vertebrae and making sure they are in proper alignment. All of this is done in an exact manner through precise measurements and the actual adjustment is gentle as well.

At Living Well Chiropractic, we use the NUCCA method. Such a precise treatment goes a long way in promoting health and normal function to the upper cervical region. Besides relieving pain, it can often help the neck regain its normal curve.
