Trigeminal Neuralgia Care

Trigeminal NeuralgiaWhat is trigeminal neuralgia? The trigeminal nerve is the biggest and most intricate nerve of the 12 cranial nerves. It extends from the base of the skull to the face. It is primarily responsible for transmitting sensations from the face to the brain. Trigeminal neuralgia is a type of chronic pain that occurs as a result of this nerve misfiring. Symptoms may include:

  • Severe, jabbing pain similar to the feeling of electric shock
  • Burning sensation in the facial area
  • Random pain attacks provoked by touching the face or eating.
  • Attacks occurring more frequently

What are my care options?

Care for trigeminal neuralgia can include:

  1. Injections — Glycerol, Botox
  2. Pain Medication — used to lessen the harshness of attacks
  3. Surgery — radio frequency, thermal lesioning, balloon compression

These care options are able to ease the pain but are unable to eliminate the possible cause of trigeminal neuralgia.

Trigeminal Neuralgia and Your Neck

Did you know that a misalignment of the atlas (the first bone in your neck) may trigger trigeminal neuralgia symptoms? Your spine primarily protects your spinal cord, which transmits signals to and from your brain. When the atlas is misaligned, this causes pressure within the spinal cord, triggering improper signals. These improper signals cause the trigeminal nerve to misfire, leading to excruciating pain.

Here at Living Well Chiropractic in Plymouth, Minnesota, we are trained in specific techniques to gently realign the atlas. Through these various types of adjustments, we are able to reduce the pressure on the spinal cord so that proper signals can be sent to and from the brain. These adjustments can correct the misfiring occurring from the trigeminal nerve, reducing the neuralgia symptoms.

There was a case reported of a 14-year-old female who suffered from this disease. After just one upper cervical adjustment, she experienced complete alleviation of symptoms. After one year of care, she still reports no pain.
